SUMMARY:Tree Songs: Braiding the Paths of the Labyrinth & the Celtic Tree Zodiac - 2 Sessions (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a two-session online labyrinth retreat\, Thursdays\, October 20th & 27th. We welcome back Barrie Gibby\, who will engage participants in a deeper understanding of the labyrinth by linking its quadrants and path to life phases and the Celtic Tree Zodiac. \nTrees are the oldest living beings on earth and are more precious now than ever. How does their wisdom deepen our understanding of transformative life? Following the path of the labyrinth and practices of the Celts\, how are we listening to the trees and learning from their profound and patient wisdom? What song is rising in the sap of your soul tree to share with the world? What can we do to take meaningful action for eco-justice in our interior and exterior landscapes to partner with the Mother? \n\nIn this two-part series\, we gather as pilgrims to celebrate the beauty of your mystical Celtic birth tree and healing properties\, identify your soul tree\, and interweave the sacred feminine through the embodied spiritual practice of walking the labyrinth. The experiences of journaling\, sharing\nphotos in a slide collage\, honoring your Ogham (ancient Celtic alphabet) symbol\, creating an altar\, and singing with the trees (and Ruth!) to unfold a new path given to us by the ancients are all elements of this two- session mini-retreat. \nResources sent in advance. Open to all. \nDates: Thursdays\, October 20 & 27\, 2022. \nLeaders: Barrie Carter Gibby is an educator\, social justice activist\, accomplished pianist\, and theater director. As a member of the Veriditas Faculty (Worldwide Labyrinth Project)\, Veriditas Council and an Advanced Certified Labyrinth facilitator\, Barrie finds sacred spaces everywhere.\n \n \nRuth Cunningham is a sound healing practitioner and was a founding member of the group Anonymous 4. She specializes in early music performance as well as improvisational sacred music from varied spiritual traditions in both liturgical and concert settings. She works with individuals and groups on using the voice and music for healing and creating a spiritual practice using sound. With Anonymous 4\, Ruth performed in concerts and festivals throughout the United States\, Europe and the Far East and made thirteen recordings.  She is a member of the core faculty for The Chartres Academy Wisdom School that meets in Chartres France each summer. Learn more about Ruth here. \n \nCost: $60. Sessions will be recorded for those with schedule conflicts. \nRegister below. Registrants will receive a Zoom link in the automated ticket confirmation. \nThis workshop is a natural extension of our programming\, as RCWMS has been using its own 40’ x 40’ canvas labyrinth since 1998. For more information about RCWMS’s labyrinth programming history and current opportunities please visit Labyrinth Resources and scroll down to the video featuring RCWMS’ Jeanette Stokes.

SUMMARY:Ministry of Black Women's Self Care\, October\, 2022 - with Kim Gaubault (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Kim Gaubault recognizes that self-care is often the component that remains a form of intervention (after the break or the medical emergency) rather than a preventative measure. When we allow our bodies\, minds and/or spirits to break down in the course of doing this work\, we are not only putting ourselves at risk but we are putting at risk the integrity of the work for which we are laboring. This work is a work of self-love\, communal love\, Womanist Ethicism\, it is multi-generational\, multicultural and is not finite\, but is instead as infinite as the beauty in the divinity that is Blackness. Come and share in this life’s work! This program is specifically designed to offer practical tools for everyday self-care to Black women-identified individuals doing all forms of ministry\, in church and community. \nSeptember 21: Making a Way Out of No Way: Black Women Living in Authenticity October 19: Finding a Flow: Moving Through Life’s Seasons\nNovember 16: Protecting My Peace\nDecember 21: Finishing Strong: Where I Was\, Where I Am\, Where I’m Going… \nLeader: Kimberly Gaubault (McCrae) is an intentional lover of humanity and actively lives the self-care life about which she teaches and advocates. Her personal philosophy of interpersonal interaction is\, “If I’ve not positively influenced someone everywhere I’ve gone\, I’ve not walked in my purpose.” \nCost: $10\, $25\, or $40 \nper session. Choose the price that fits your budget. \nRegister for October below. \nRegister for November: HERE. December: HERE. \nRegistrants will receive a Zoom link in the automated ticket confirmation.

SUMMARY:Historic Stagville Tour - October 2022
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of Historic Stagville\, a state historic site in northern Durham County that includes remnants of one of the largest plantations in North Carolina. The Bennehan-Cameron family owned approximately 30\,000 acres of land\, and enslaved about 900 people on this property. Stagville protects a fraction of the land from that plantation\, including original housing for enslaved people (1851)\, a massive barn (1860)\, and a Bennehan family house (1787-1799). Stagville is dedicated to teaching about the lives and work of enslaved people on the plantation. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to join Stagville staff and other community members in learning more about Historic Stagville. The tour will begin at 1:00. Please allow sufficient time for the drive there.\n\nLocation: 5828 Old Oxford Road\, Durham\, NC. We’ll meet at the visitors center\, which is the dark green building all the way at the end of the driveway. Everyone can park in the lot there to start. The address is 5828 Old Oxford\, Durham\, NC 27712. If folks are coming from Durham or Highway 85\, once they are on Old Oxford Highway they should keep an eye out for a Merck construction site and big company entrance on the left– the site entrance will be the next driveway on the right. Look for a sign that says Historic Stagville and a gravel driveway with a wooden gate. If you pass Stagville Road on the left\, you’ve gone too far!\n\nCost: $10/person. Additional donations to Stagville are welcome here.\n\nRegister below.

SUMMARY:Making the Road As We Go: A Reading with Jeanette Stokes (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a reading with RCWMS Executive Director Jeanette Stokes\, whose new book\, Making the Road as We Go\, is now available for pre-order. \nThe day Jeanette Stokes graduated from Duke Divinity School in 1977\, she turned to some friends and said\, “They’ll be sorry.” With only an inkling of what she would do next\, she felt sure it would have something to do with women\, faith\, and social justice. A couple of months later\, with the help of friends\, she founded the Resource Center for Women and Ministry in the South (RCWMS)\, where she has served as Executive Director for most of the past forty-five years. In Making the Road as We Go she explores the path that led her from childhood in Tulsa\, Oklahoma\, to Smith College during the Vietnam War\, to seminary at Duke Divinity School and ordination as a Presbyterian minister. In the book she reflects on her evolving relationship with the church and her development as a feminist devoted to an expanded vision of faith and spirituality. This vision—which she has created in concert with an ever-changing community—provides sustenance for the challenges of working for justice and living in an imperfect world. \nJeanette Stokes is the author of three collections of essays\, 25 Years in the Garden\, 35 Years on the Path\, and Just Keep Going; three memoirs\, Hurricane Season: Living Through a Broken Heart\, Flying Over Home\, and Following a Female Line; and a book on writing\, Just Keep Going: Advice on Writing and Life. She is happier if she spends some time each week walking\, writing\, painting\, and messing around in the garden. \n\nPre-order the book: HERE. \nPlease REGISTER for the reading by selecting a free ticket below. Registrants will receive both a receipt and a separate email with a Zoom link in the automated ticket confirmation. Please check your spam and/or promotions folder if you don’t receive one or both of these emails. We will also be sending Zoom link reminders just prior to the event.

SUMMARY:South of Heaven - A Reading by Patti Meredith (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:“With an impeccable ear for dialogue\, an artist’s eye for detail\, and deep understanding of the push and pull of family\, Meredith gives us South of Heaven—a celebration of growth and survival when confronted by mistakes and denial and\, ultimately\, how people can be transformed by acceptance and the astonishing surprises we should all be looking for. A beautiful read!”\n-Darnell Arnoult\, author of Sufficient Grace and Galaxie Wagon \nJoin us for a reading with Patti Meredith from her debut novel\, South of Heaven. \nSouth of Heaven\, set in Carthage\, North Carolina in 1998\, tells the story of two middle-aged sisters stuck under the same leaky roof as their secrets become front-page news. \nMiscommunications and slights\, real and imagined\, threaten to keep Fern and Leona divided but the inexplicable bond of family\, a widowed preacher in search of his own lost faith\, and an unlikely business venture deliver rescue. South of Heaven is a testament to second chances and unexpected consequences. \nAuthor: Patti Meredith grew up in Galax\, Virginia. Most of her stories are set in the Blue Ridge Mountains\, but her debut novel\, South of Heaven\, takes place in the North Carolina Sandhills where her family’s roots run deep. Meredith worked for many years at UNC-TV on the long running program\, North Carolina People with William Friday.  She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Memphis. Her stories have appeared in Appalachian Heritage\, Still: The Journal\, and Mulberry Fork Review. \nOrder a copy of the book HERE. \nPlease REGISTER by selecting a free ticket below. SUMMARY:Ministry of Black Women's Self Care\, June\, 2022 - with Kim Gaubault (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Kim Gaubault recognizes that self-care is often the component that remains a form of intervention (after the break or the medical emergency) rather than a preventative measure. SUMMARY:To Taste Life Twice: Writing the Personal Essay with Allison Kirkland (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT! Forget those stodgy 5 paragraph formats you learned in high school\, or the college entrance essays you were forced to write for admissions. Essay comes from the french word essayer\, which quite literally means “to try.” It is one of the most expansive and delightful literary forms. In this collaborative and generative class we are going to read some great essays\, talk about what makes them sing\, and then work with prompts to generate some of our own. We’ll talk about voice\, style\, characterization and how to make the personal universal. \nLeader: Allison Kirkland is a recent recipient of the Ella Pratt Emerging Artist Grant from the Durham Arts Council! She earned her MFA in creative nonfiction from The New School in New York City\, and teaches workshops all over the Triangle. One workshop participant noted that “Allison has an uncanny ability\, or else a well honed one\, to pull out words you didn’t know were in your head.” You can learn more about Allison here. \nClasses will take place on May 10\, 17\, 24\, & 31. \nCost: $100. Includes all four sessions. \nRegister below. Registrants will receive a Zoom link in the automated ticket confirmation.

SUMMARY:Labyrinth Pilgrimage: Walking With Trees & Celtic Practice (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this two-session online labyrinth retreat on April 14th & 21st. We welcome Barrie Gibby\, who engages participants in a deeper understanding of the labyrinth as a tool for healing and renewal as well as a companion on the journey to the divine within. Partnering Celtic Spirituality with the sacredness of trees\, this labyrinth experience embodies our prayers\, reawakens our hearts\, and honors the feminine creative spirit.  \nThe Celtic culture highly reveres the sacredness of all beings in balanced relationship. Trees especially are a profound part of that bondedness of harmonious life. As pilgrims in these uncertain times\, we will explore life phases of trees and women\, then walk (with our fingers!) among the four quadrants of the medieval labyrinth\, shifting our focus to the vigilant path of a just “tree community”. \nYou are invited to an online embodied journey that includes rituals\, journal prompts\, the arts\, contemplative labyrinth walks and expanded imaginings. Downloadable labyrinth designs can be followed with a finger or a stylus. Resources sent in advance. Open to all.  \nDates: Thursdays\, April 14 & 21\, 2022. \nFacilitator: Barrie Carter Gibby works on the creative edge between the branches of words and movement expression. An educator\, social justice activist\, accomplished pianist\, theater director\, and labyrinth facilitator\, she facilitates retreats to an international audience on a variety of themes. As a member of the Veriditas Faculty (Worldwide Labyrinth Project)\, Veriditas Council and an Advanced Certified Labyrinth facilitator\, Barrie finds sacred spaces everywhere. \n Cost: $60.

This labyrinth is a copy of the labyrinth in the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France from around 1220. \n\n\n“Walking the labyrinth is a wonderful way to set aside some time for quiet retreat\, unwind and listen for our deepest wisdom\,” explains RCWMS Executive Director Jeanette Stokes. “While physically engaged in following the curving path\, the mind can be free to rest or focus on a particular thought or issue\, and the heart can be free to listen for the leading of God. The labyrinth is a wonderful container for our hopes\, questions and concerns. As we walk\, new insights often arise.” \n\nPlan to allow about half an hour for your labyrinth walk. Please wear clean socks. The event is free and all are welcome.

SUMMARY:Historic Stagville Tour - March 2022
