Essay comes from the french word essayer\, which quite literally means “to try.” It is one of the most expansive and delightful literary forms. In this collaborative and generative class we are going to read some great essays\, talk about what makes them sing\, and then work with prompts to generate some of our own. We’ll talk about voice\, style\, characterization and how to make the personal universal. \nLeader: Allison Kirkland is a recent recipient of the Ella Pratt Emerging Artist Grant from the Durham Arts Council! DESCRIPTION:Join us for this two-session online labyrinth retreat on April 14th & 21st. We welcome Barrie Gibby\, who engages participants in a deeper understanding of the labyrinth as a tool for healing and renewal as well as a companion on the journey to the divine within. Partnering Celtic Spirituality with the sacredness of trees\, this labyrinth experience embodies our prayers\, reawakens our hearts\, and honors the feminine creative spirit.  \nThe Celtic culture highly reveres the sacredness of all beings in balanced relationship. Trees especially are a profound part of that bondedness of harmonious life. As pilgrims in these uncertain times\, we will explore life phases of trees and women\, then walk (with our fingers!) among the four quadrants of the medieval labyrinth\, shifting our focus to the vigilant path of a just “tree community”. \nYou are invited to an online embodied journey that includes rituals\, journal prompts\, the arts\, contemplative labyrinth walks and expanded imaginings. Downloadable labyrinth designs can be followed with a finger or a stylus. Resources sent in advance. DESCRIPTION:After a two-year hiatus\, RCWMS welcomes the opportunity to share our labyrinth again with Duke Chapel. \nThe labyrinth will be available to walk on Monday\, April 4\, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm and on Tuesday\, April 5\, from 10:00 – 8:00 pm. \nThe labyrinth\, a 40-foot circle containing a winding path\, is an ancient spiritual practice of meditation and self-centering found in religious traditions from around the world. This labyrinth is a copy of the labyrinth in the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France from around 1220. \n\n\n“Walking the labyrinth is a wonderful way to set aside some time for quiet retreat\, unwind and listen for our deepest wisdom\,” explains RCWMS Executive Director Jeanette Stokes. “While physically engaged in following the curving path\, the mind can be free to rest or focus on a particular thought or issue\, and the heart can be free to listen for the leading of God. The labyrinth is a wonderful container for our hopes\, questions and concerns. As we walk\, new insights often arise.” \n\nPlan to allow about half an hour for your labyrinth walk. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of Historic Stagville\, a state historic site in northern Durham County that includes remnants of one of the largest plantations in North Carolina. The Bennehan-Cameron family owned approximately 30\,000 acres of land\, and enslaved about 900 people on this property. Stagville protects a fraction of the land from that plantation\, including original housing for enslaved people (1851)\, a massive barn (1860)\, and a Bennehan family house (1787-1799). Stagville is dedicated to teaching about the lives and work of enslaved people on the plantation. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to join Stagville staff and other community members in learning more about Historic Stagville. The tour will begin at 1:00. Please allow sufficient time for the drive there.\n\nLocation: 5828 Old Oxford Road\, Durham\, NC. We’ll meet at the visitors center\, which is the dark green building all the way at the end of the driveway. Everyone can park in the lot there to start. The address is 5828 Old Oxford\, Durham\, NC 27712. If folks are coming from Durham or Highway 85\, once they are on Old Oxford Highway they should keep an eye out for a Merck construction site and big company entrance on the left– the site entrance will be the next driveway on the right. SUMMARY:Practical Practices for the Nine Enneagram Types
DESCRIPTION:In this two-hour workshop\, participants with some familiarity with the Enneagram are invited to bring their questions about the Enneagram along with an openness and  desire to grow. \nOur time together begins with a period of questions and comments related to the Enneagram System. Participants are invited to bring questions that are emerging from their personal work with their Enneagram type. From there\, Sandra will offer suggestions and practices for “loosening the grip” of our Enneagram type and name some of the physical clues we may notice that indicate we’ve gone on automatic. \nThis work with the Enneagram Map is complex and as we deepen our awareness we begin the shift from automatic living to a full and authentic life. \nLeader: Veteran teacher Sandra Smith is certified in the Narrative Enneagram and is a mentor for candidates certifying to teach. For over 20 years\, Sandra has taught basic and advanced Enneagram workshops\, offered organizational trainings and engaged in individual spiritual direction sessions.
