SUMMARY:Historic Stagville Tour - March 2022
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of Historic Stagville\, a state historic site in northern Durham County that includes remnants of one of the largest plantations in North Carolina. The Bennehan-Cameron family owned approximately 30\,000 acres of land\, and enslaved about 900 people on this property. Stagville protects a fraction of the land from that plantation\, including original housing for enslaved people (1851)\, a massive barn (1860)\, and a Bennehan family house (1787-1799). Stagville is dedicated to teaching about the lives and work of enslaved people on the plantation. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to join Stagville staff and other community members in learning more about Historic Stagville. The tour will begin at 1:00. Please allow sufficient time for the drive there.\n\nLocation: 5828 Old Oxford Road\, Durham\, NC. We’ll meet at the visitors center\, which is the dark green building all the way at the end of the driveway. Everyone can park in the lot there to start. The address is 5828 Old Oxford\, Durham\, NC 27712. If folks are coming from Durham or Highway 85\, once they are on Old Oxford Highway they should keep an eye out for a Merck construction site and big company entrance on the left– the site entrance will be the next driveway on the right. Look for a sign that says Historic Stagville and a gravel driveway with a wooden gate. If you pass Stagville Road on the left\, you’ve gone too far!\n\nCost: $10/person. Additional donations to Stagville are welcome here.\n\nRegister below.

SUMMARY:Conservation Burial Grounds in the Piedmont: A Conversation with Bluestem Founders
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about Bluestem\, a beautiful piece of land north of Hillsborough\, NC\, that is being developed as a nature preserve and a burial ground. Let co-founders Heidi Hannapel and Jeff Masten tell you more about the process of developing Blustem\, the first conservation burial ground in the Piedmont. \nWhy conservation burial\, and why Bluestem in particular? Cemeteries are places for people to be permanently memorialized and places at which family and loved ones may gather for reflection. Conservation burial grounds serve as places where individual and community commitment to conservation and perpetuity come together.  Bluestem will be a conservation cemetery designed as a nature preserve and place of reverence\, with a trail network\, quiet areas for reflection\, open space for contemplation\, and designated areas within its restored landscape for natural burial. \nJoin us to learn more about this exciting community endeavor. If you’d like to learn more in advance of our conversation with Heidi and Jeff\, please visit the Bluestem website. \nLeaders: Jeff Masten and Heidi Hannapel are conservation professionals who formed Landmatters to boost awareness of the importance of preserving land and recognizing the bond between humans and nature. Since 2015\, the organization has been developing a vision for a conservation cemetery. Learn more about Heidi and Jeff here. \nCost: $5.00. Proceeds will go to support Bluestem. \nRegistrants will receive a Zoom link in the automated ticket confirmation.

SUMMARY:Saving the Wild South — A Reading with Georgann Eubanks
DESCRIPTION:A big hurdle to instilling a greater appreciation of the environmental crises facing the world—climate change  first among them—is getting our hands on engaging stories about how we know what we know about  science. Georgann Eubanks\, with the help of magnificent photographs by Donna Campbell\, has solved that  problem for twelve fascinating native plants under threat in the South. This book is just what we need to get  folks more engaged.\n                        —Holden Thorp\, editor-in-chief of Science \n\nWith her latest work\, Saving the Wild South\, veteran writer and storyteller Georgann Eubanks takes a leap into the world of botany to bring readers a deeper understanding of both the threats and most promising developments in the protection and restoration of our region’s extraordinary biodiversity. \nCovering Alabama\, Georgia\, Florida\, North Carolina\, South Carolina and Tennessee\, the book begins with stories of early botanical researchers who first identified species found nowhere else on earth—discoveries that continue to this day. In plain language Eubanks describes the scientific principles behind the work of contemporary botanists and provides a window into the personal motivations and passions that drew them into the field. \n\n\nAbout the Author: Georgann Eubanks is a writer\, teacher\, and consultant to nonprofit groups across the country. She is director of the Table Rock Writers Workshop\, was a founder of the North Carolina Writers’ Network\, and is past chair of the North Carolina Humanities Council. She lives in Carrboro\, N.C. \nOrder the book: HERE. \n\nPlease register for the reading by selecting a free ticket below. Registrants will receive both a receipt and a separate email with a Zoom link in the automated ticket confirmation. Please check your spam and/or promotions folder if you don’t receive one or both of these emails. We will also be sending Zoom link reminders just prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Flesh and Bones: Learning to Love this Body -- A Reading with Liddy Grantland (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a reading with Liddy Grantland from her new book\, Flesh and Bones: Learning to Love This Body. \nGrantland lives with a body that hurts all the time. During her final year as an undergraduate\, she decided to write about chronic pain for her school newspaper. Her words\, collected in this volume\, tell an intimate and particular story of what one woman’s body is teaching her about love\, loss\, and justice. Grantland offers an honest and hopeful vision for what the world might look like if we all learned to love our flesh and bones: how our churches\, schools\, relationships\, and politics  could be liberated by an intersectional feminist ethic of embodiment. This collection insists that hurt and healing\, grief and wholeness\, fear and hope have never been mutually exclusive\, and that the work of being present to the pain of our bodies and our world will set each one of us free. \nThese essays invite us to make beauty out of everything that hurts—\neven when what hurts is our own selves.\n—Jamie Lee Finch\n\nIn this brave\, bold\, embodied blessing of the world through words\,\nreaders will discover a truth that will set them free.\n—Rev. Dr. Luke Powery\n\nKind without saccharine\, wise without preachiness\, Grantland’s columns\nare a journey in the spaces that elude easy answers.\n—Melissa Florer-Bixler\n\nAbout the Author: Liddy Grantland\, born and raised in Columbia\, South Carolina\, graduated from Duke University in 2020 with a degree in African American Studies and English. While at Duke\, she wrote a biweekly column for The Chronicle called “Feel Your Feelings” that was about living with chronic pain and living with much more. Grantland currently lives in an intentional community in the DC area. \n\nOrder the book: HERE. \nPlease register for the reading by selecting a free ticket below. Registrants will receive both a receipt and a separate email with a Zoom link in the automated ticket confirmation. SUMMARY:Practical Practices for the Nine Enneagram Types
DESCRIPTION:In this two-hour workshop\, participants with some familiarity with the Enneagram are invited to bring their questions about the Enneagram along with an openness and  desire to grow. \nOur time together begins with a period of questions and comments related to the Enneagram System. Participants are invited to bring questions that are emerging from their personal work with their Enneagram type. From there\, Sandra will offer suggestions and practices for “loosening the grip” of our Enneagram type and name some of the physical clues we may notice that indicate we’ve gone on automatic. \nThis work with the Enneagram Map is complex and as we deepen our awareness we begin the shift from automatic living to a full and authentic life. \nLeader: Veteran teacher Sandra Smith is certified in the Narrative Enneagram and is a mentor for candidates certifying to teach. For over 20 years\, Sandra has taught basic and advanced Enneagram workshops\, offered organizational trainings and engaged in individual spiritual direction sessions. She co-hosts the podcast “Heart of the Enneagram” which is heard in over 80 countries.  Learn more about Sandra’s work at AlchemyWorksEvents.com. \nCost: $45 \nRegister below. \nRegistrants will receive a Zoom link in the automated ticket confirmation.

SUMMARY:Letters from Old Screamer Mountain: A Reading with Melanie Morrison (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:RCWMS is honored to invite you to a reading with Melanie Morrison from her new book\, Letters from Old Screamer Mountain. The reading is sponsored by RCWMS and EVERYbody Reads\, Books and Stuff\, an independent bookstore in Melanie’s hometown of Lansing\, Michigan. \nIn 1939\, when Melanie Morrison’s mother\, Eleanor\, was eighteen\, she spent a winter weekend at the home of Lillian Smith on Old Screamer Mountain in North Georgia. Smith was a white Southern author who wrote scathing critiques of white supremacy. That weekend was an unforgettable turning point in Eleanor’s young life as she and her college friends stayed up late listening to Lillian read from her manuscripts and talk about the shriveled-up heart of whiteness. \n\nSeven decades later\, in 2012\, Melanie made a pilgrimage to the Lillian E. Smith Center to write about the intergenerational legacies of lynching and how that reign of terror remains largely unacknowledged by the descendants of its white perpetrators.\n \n\nFrom the mountain\, Melanie wrote letters to her mother describing the avalanche of emotions and epiphanies she was experiencing. Letters from Old Screamer Mountain is an intimate testimony to the power of intergenerational legacies and the urgency to write what must not be forgotten. \nMelanie S. Morrison is the author of four books\, including Murder on Shades Mountain: The Legal Lynching of Willie Peterson and the Struggle for Justice in Jim Crow Birmingham. Morrison is a seasoned racial justice educator\, speaker\, and author with thirty years experience designing and facilitating transformational group process. Author’s website: melaniemorrison.net. \n\nPre-order the book: HERE. \nPlease REGISTER for the reading by selecting a free ticket below. Registrants will receive both a receipt and a separate email with a Zoom link in the automated ticket confirmation. SUMMARY:Approaching Intuitive Collage in 3 Steps with Jeannette Brossart (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:You might ask yourself how making a collage can be intuitive and organized at the same time. Artist Jeannette Brossart uses collage as a creative jumpstart for making other art and is always surprised and inspired by the results. Since she doesn’t like to draw and paint\, she keeps a collage journal. Her “anything goes” intuitive process provides her with an abundance of questions and possibilities: where to start\, what to use first\, what does she feel like doing.  Using a 3-step framework makes it easy to adapt to your own artistic and creative strengths. For example\, Jeannette has created pages and pages with just images and text from National Geographic magazines. This workshop will encourage participants to use papers full of color and texture that might be sitting on your desk\, bits and scraps of treasures you can’t bear to part with\, or parts of your own journal musings or letters from others. \nJoin Jeannette Brossart for some collage fun. She will be working in real time alongside you. This class will spend some time on material selection. Please have magazines\, paper scraps\, etc. available. You don’t have to cut anything out ahead of time\, we recommend making copies of any materials you do not want to damage. After the material selection process\, we’ll move on to assembly/composition and then reflection/sharing as desired. \nMaterials needed: \nWide variety of images/text: magazines (OLD NAT GEOS are great for this! scrap papers\, ephemera\, repurposed art\, journal pages\, newspaper clippings\, etc. \nTIP: make copies if you do not want to use originals! \nAdhesive and applicator:  Mod Podge is preferred\, but most white PVA/dry clear glues will work if you water them down. Foam or wide paintbrush will work OK for glue. \nBase item to stick to: wood\, cardboard\, or double page thickness in an art journal works too. \nRecommended extras: wax paper\, scissors\, baby wipes for hands/glue drips \n** we won’t be using wet media like paint\, marker\, etc. in this class\, but you can modify to add BEFORE the top layer of Mod Podge as you like. \nLeader: Jeannette Brossart is a professional mosaic artist\, public artist\, and teaching artist in Durham\, NC. Creative reuse is important to her and is reflected in her work which can be viewed at www.mothernaturemosaics.com \nCost: $45 \nRegister below. \nRegistrants will receive both a receipt and a separate email with a Zoom link in the automated ticket confirmation. SUMMARY:Historic Stagville Tour - October 2021
SUMMARY:Bitter Magic: A Reading with Nancy Kilgore (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to host Nancy Kilgore on Sunday\, October 10\, for a reading from her new novel\, Bitter Magic. Inspired by the true story of the witchcraft trial of Isobel Gowdie in 1662\, a chance encounter leads teenaged Margaret into the circle of Gowdie\, a “cunning woman” who practices magic and travels in the fairy world. But Scotland is aflame with wars over religion–English against Scots\, Catholics against Protestants–and in the Scottish Highlands the witch craze is at its height. \n“Kilgore paints a world in conflict between folkloric beliefs of fairies and magic—views held by the common folk and by many in the upper class—and adherence to Presbyterian beliefs and practices…the reader comes to understand how different beliefs coexisted and which beliefs benefited those in power. Additionally\, the novel has a number of feminist threads\, illustrating injustices the female characters face and the ways they seek to be masters of their own fates. All of this is set amongst the lush green and rocky scenery of a seaside village filled with fairies.” – Rebecca Welper\, RCWMS. For more of Rebecca’s review\, visit our blog. \n“Based on the life story of a confessed witch\, Nancy Hayes Kilgore’s engrossing historical novel Bitter Magic concerns a teenager with a dangerous interest in magic. Ample details about the religious and political landscape of 1660s Scotland enliven the text\, including around the struggle for dominance between Catholics and Protestants\, and the emerging importance of rationality in religious discourse. Characters discuss the crimes committed by witches\, their hardships\, and the glaring inequities in wealth distribution among people who were supposed to be equal in the eyes of God.” – Foreward Review. \nKilgore lives and writes in Burlington\, Vermont. Formerly a parish pastor (Presbyterian and Congregational\,) she has been been writing fiction and essays and practicing as a pastoral counselor (psychotherapist) for over twenty years. SUMMARY:Quilts\, Quilting\, and Soul with Jereann King Johnson (via Zoom)

SUMMARY:Historic Stagville Tour - September
DESCRIPTION:Editor’s note: The September Stagville event is now sold out. Please register now to join us in October if you are able. \nJoin us for a tour of Historic Stagville\, a state historic site in northern Durham County that includes remnants of one of the largest plantations in North Carolina. The tour will begin at 11:00. Please allow sufficient time for the drive there.\n\nLocation: 5828 Old Oxford\, Highway\, Durham\, NC\n\nCost: $10/person. Additional donations to Stagville are welcome here.\n\nRegister below.
