SUMMARY:Fabric Postcard Workshop with Kimberley Cartwright (RESCHEDULED)
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This event has been rescheduled.  We will likely offer it again in late fall\, in time to create gifts for the Holidays. Keep an eye on our website for further information. \nBack by popular demand! Fiber artist\, quilter\, and instructor Kimberley Pierce Cartwright is back with another workshop on creating unique quilted fabric and paper post cards.  In this workshop Cartwright will teach you how to make a one of a kind art piece perfect for mailing\, gifting or displaying.  Kimberley will provide a pattern and step by step directions or you may decide to freestyle your design. If you don’t have a sewing machine\, you can use fabric glue. You may also participate using paper instead of fabric. \nLeader: Kimberley Pierce Cartwright began quilting and painting in 2006 and understands quilt work to represent an abstraction of real life. She says of her work\, “I have the power to create art in my life. I do that through my quilting. Sometimes I plan what I will do and sometimes I don’t. The result is always something I love. Everyone has the same power to create art in our own unique way.” \nCartwright’s work evokes emotion through her distinctive use of color and includes abstract caricatures\, acrylic paintings\, and mixed media embellishments. She also creates dolls and works on paper and canvas. Her love of color punctuates her use of very simple designs. She has taught classes in quilting and sewing. She has shown her work locally and around North Carolina\, and it has also appeared in the international magazines Quilting Arts and Quilt Mania. \nFabric supply list: \n\nSewing machine in good working order\nIron\nScrap fabric in various colors (some medium weight fabric…denim\, canvas etc. for quilt tops)\nLight colored cotton fabric for backing.\nFabric glue (optional if you don’t have a sewing machine)\nNewspaper or paper towels to use as backing for lightweight fabric\nThread\, scissors\, pins for securing fabric\, and hand needles (optional)\nDouble sided Peltex for quilted postcards sewn on machine\nRotary cutter and a cutting board\nQuilting ruler or ruler to cut straight edges\n\nPaper supply list: \n\nMagazines\, picture books or other images\nScissors for cutting paper\nRotary cutter (optional) you can use scissors to cut\nCutting mat (optional)\nEmbellishment that can lay flat (fabric\, ribbon\, lace\, glitter etc.)\nAdhesive (glue stick\, mod podge\, crazy glue or hot glue)\nRuler\nCardboard from a cereal box or other packaging with similar light weight (make sure you have enough for at least four 4×6 inch cards.)\nFine-tipped marker to make marks and to sign the back of cards\n\nPurchase Kimberley’s new book Fabric Post Card Cat/Dog: HERE

SUMMARY:Ministry of Black Women's Self Care\, June - with Kim Gaubault (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Kim Gaubault recognizes that self-care is often the component that remains a form of intervention (after the break or the medical emergency) rather than a preventative measure. SUMMARY:The Gifts and Challenges of the Enneagram Types in Relationships - with Sandra Smith (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:All of us experience healthy relationships in our lives. How are we engaging and what\, exactly\, are we doing to support relationships working well? In other relationships\, we find ourselves repeating patterns that limit our full relational potential. The emotional maturity necessary for our primary relationships is cultivated by our willingness to be aware\, honest\, and intimate with ourselves. Healthy relationships emerge when we can be present with what is in ourselves and in the other. \nDuring our time together we’ll explore each type’s relational gifts that support healthy relating and patterns that derail relationships.  Self-reflection and type groups will support our learning process. \nLeader: Sandra Smith\, MDiv\, is a certified Enneagram teacher in the Narrative Tradition who consults and teaches throughout North America. Learn more about her work here. \nCost: $35 \nRegister below. \nRegistrants will receive a Zoom link in the automated ticket confirmation.

SUMMARY:Risking Words: A 4-Week Workshop with Peggy Millin (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, you will learn and use Centered Writing Practice\, a body-centered freewriting technique employing neutral prompts. At the end of 4 weeks\, you will have a notebook of your in-class writing and a technique for the continued support of your writing journey. \n\nLeader: For more than 25 years\, Peggy Tabor Millin has offered programs in the written word to facilitate women in telling their truth so they can stand in their power and create positive change in their world. Peggy is author of Mary’s Way and Women\, Writing\, and SoulMaking. Learn more about Peggy here. \nCost: $85. Includes all four sessions.\n\nRegistration below includes all four sessions. SUMMARY:Approaching Intuitive Collage in 3 Steps with Jeannette Brossart (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:You might ask yourself how making a collage can be intuitive and organized at the same time. Artist Jeannette Brossart uses collage as a creative jumpstart for making other art and is always surprised and inspired by the results. Since she doesn’t like to draw and paint\, she keeps a collage journal. Her “anything goes” intuitive process provides her with an abundance of questions and possibilities: where to start\, what to use first\, what does she feel like doing.  Using a 3-step framework makes it easy to adapt to your own artistic and creative strengths. For example\, Jeannette has created pages and pages with just images and text from National Geographic magazines. This workshop will encourage participants to use papers full of color and texture that might be sitting on your desk\, bits and scraps of treasures you can’t bear to part with\, or parts of your own journal musings or letters from others. \nJoin Jeannette Brossart for some collage fun; she will be working in real time alongside you. This class will spend some time on material selection. Please have magazines\, paper scraps\, etc. available. You don’t have to cut anything out ahead of time\, we recommend making copies of any materials you do not want to damage. After the material selection process\, we’ll move on to assembly/composition and then reflection/sharing as desired. \nMaterials needed: \nWide variety of images/text: magazines (OLD NAT GEOS are great for this! scrap papers\, ephemera\, repurposed art\, journal pages\, newspaper clippings\, etc. \nTIP: make copies if you do not want to use originals! \nAdhesive and applicator:  I prefer Mod Podge\, but most white PVA/dry clear glues will work if you water them down. Foam or wide paintbrush will work OK for glue. \nBase item to stick to: wood\, cardboard\, or double page thickness in an art journal works too. \nRecommended extras: wax paper\, scissors\, baby wipes for hands/glue drips \n** we won’t be using wet media like paint\, marker\, etc. in this class\, but you can modify to add BEFORE the top layer of Mod Podge as you like. \nLeader: Jeannette Brossart is a professional mosaic artist\, public artist\, and teaching artist in Durham\, NC. Creative reuse is important to her and is reflected in her work which can be viewed at www.mothernaturemosaics.com \nCost: $45 \nRegister below. \nRegistrants will receive a Zoom link in the automated ticket confirmation

SUMMARY:Women Rowing North: a Discussion Group with Lisa Baron (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:“The core concern of this life stage\, with all of its perils and pleasures\, is how to cultivate resilient responses to the challenges we face. Resilience is built by attention and intention. We can take responsibility for our attitudes and focus on our strengths and our joys. We can go deep and face truth squarely. We can learn the skills that allow us to adapt to anything. Yes\, anything.”\n–Mary Pipher\, Women Rowing North: Navigating Life’s Currents and Flourishing as We Age \nIn her groundbreaking book\, Women Rowing North\, Mary Pipher offers a timely examination of cultural and developmental issues women face as they transition from middle age to old age. \nJoin Lisa Baron for a small group discussion of Pipher’s book and the ways in which we can all “cultivate resilient responses to challenges we face.” If there is interest\, Lisa is willing to continue the discussion in the form of an ongoing support group\, based on ideas in this important book. \nPlease read the book before coming to the workshop. It is available from local bookstores\, in an audio version (Audible) and on Kindle. \nLeader: Lisa Baron\, skilled group facilitator\, is a social worker\, therapist\, and writer; she co-led the program for “How Did I Get Here and Where Am I Going?” and led the “Coffee and Conversation” series for RCWMS in 2020. \nCost: $15 \nRegister below. \nRegistrants will receive a Zoom link in the automated ticket confirmation.

SUMMARY:Ministry of Black Womens Self Care\, December - with Kim Gaubault (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Kim Gaubault recognizes that self-care is often the component that remains a form of intervention (after the break or the medical emergency) rather than a preventative measure. When we allow our bodies\, minds and/or spirits to break down in the course of doing this work\, we are not only putting ourselves at risk but we are putting at risk the integrity of the work for which we are laboring. This work is a work of self-love\, communal love\, Womanist Ethicism\, it is multi-generational\, multicultural and is not finite\, but is instead as infinite as the beauty in the divinity that is Blackness. Come and share in this life’s work! This program is specifically designed to offer practical tools for everyday self-care to Black women-identified individuals doing all forms of ministry\, in church and community. For our December conversation we will discuss the Ethics of Community Care: I am My Sister’s Keeper. \nLeader: Kimberly Gaubault (McCrae) is an intentional lover of humanity and actively lives the self-care life about which she teaches and advocates. Her personal philosophy of interpersonal interaction is\, “If I’ve not positively influenced someone everywhere I’ve gone\, I’ve not walked in my purpose.” \nCost: $10\, $25\, or $40 per session. Sign up for one or all three remaining sessions in the series. \nRegister below. \nRegistrants will receive a Zoom link in the automated ticket confirmation.

SUMMARY:READING: Illusions of Innocence by Marcy Litle
DESCRIPTION:“I am trying to understand and own up to my whiteness. To stop wearing blinders. To untie this habitually unseen knot. This task requires attention to the voices of those I\, without thinking\, considered other. It takes breathing deep into the possibility that reality is other than I have imagined. My life different from the one I thought I was living.” —Marcy Litle\, Illusions of Innocence \nJoin RCWMS (via Zoom) at 3:00 pm Eastern Time to celebrate the publication of Marcy Litle’s new book. \n“Courageous\, inspiring\, and deeply honest\, Illusions of Innocence explores the roots of racism both in family stories and national myths. Striking the perfect balance between memoir and history\, Litle’s book engages with contemporary Black voices and invites white Americans to do the prickly but urgent work of re-examining white innocence.”—Márcia Rego \nBorn in Charleston\, SC\, and raised in suburban New York City\, Marcy Litle has spent most of her adult life in Durham\, NC. She taught Latin American history and international studies at Duke University until her retirement in 2012. Now\, she splits her time between Durham and Seattle\, WA\, where her granddaughters and their parents live. She also volunteers for RCWMS and likes to paint.
