SUMMARY:Loving Our Own Bones: A Reading with Julia Watts Belser (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:This is an extraordinary book: beautifully written and accessible yet filled with scholarly insights; profoundly spiritual yet also boldly critical; fiercely angry yet also affirming and joyous. Readers of Loving Our Own Bones will not only come away with a deepened understanding of disability and ableism but will also likely have their views of many biblical texts challenged and transformed.\n— Judith Plaskow\, coauthor of Goddess and God in the World \n\n“What’s wrong with you?” \nScholar\, activist\, and rabbi Julia Watts Belser is all too familiar with this question. What’s wrong isn’t her wheelchair\, though–it’s exclusion\, objectification\, pity\, and disdain. \nJoin Belser and fellow author Melanie Morrison as they delve into Belser’s latest book. \nOur attitudes about disability have such deep cultural roots that we almost forget their sources. But open the Bible and disability is everywhere. Moses believes his stutter renders him unable to answer God’s call. Jacob’s encounter with an angel leaves him changed not just spiritually but physically: he gains a limp. For centuries\, these stories have been told and retold in ways that treat disability as a metaphor for spiritual incapacity or as a challenge to be overcome. \nThrough fresh and unexpected readings of the Bible\, Loving Our Own Bones instead paints a luminous portrait of what it means to be disabled and one of God’s beloved. Belser delves deep into sacred literature\, braiding the insights of disabled\, feminist\, Black\, and queer thinkers with her own experiences as a queer disabled Jewish feminist. She talks back to biblical commentators who traffic in disability stigma and shame. What unfolds is a profound gift of disability wisdom\, a radical act of spiritual imagination that can guide us all toward a powerful reckoning with each other and with our bodies. \n\nLoving Our Own Bones invites readers to claim the power and promise of spiritual dissent\, and to nourish their own souls through the revolutionary art of radical self-love. \nPlease note Zoom auto captions will be enabled for this event. An ASL interpreter will also sign the evening’s conversation. \nAuthor: Julia Watts Belser (she/her) is a rabbi\, scholar\, and spiritual teacher\, as well as a longtime activist for disability\, LGBTQ\, and gender justice. She is a professor of Jewish Studies in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at Georgetown University and core faculty in Georgetown’s Disability Studies Program. Her latest book\, Loving Our Own Bones: Disability Wisdom and the Spiritual Subversiveness of Knowing Ourselves Whole\, won a National Jewish Book Award. She’s an avid wheelchair hiker\, a devoted gardener\, and a lover of wild places. Learn more about Belser here. \n \nCost: Free. Registration is required. \nPurchase the book: HERE. \nPlease REGISTER by selecting a free ticket below. Registrants will receive a Zoom link in the automated ticket confirmation.

DESCRIPTION:Kim Gaubault recognizes that self-care is often the component that remains a form of intervention (after the break or the medical emergency) rather than a preventative measure. When we allow our bodies\, minds and/or spirits to break down in the course of doing this work\, we are not only putting ourselves at risk but we are putting at risk the integrity of the work for which we are laboring. SUMMARY:Threshold Path of Imbolc on the Labyrinth: with Barrie Gibby (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Imbolc on Feb. 1\, that powerful Celtic Fire Festival between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox\, let’s light our “inextinguishable fire” on this eve\, in honor of Brighid/Bride/St. Brigid\, the ancient goddess-turned-saint\, who brings us together under the Great Oak to cross seasonal thresholds of our lives. In this “thin place” time of emerging light\, when life is quickening beneath us\, we take stock of what to leave behind and remember our own ancestors who gather at our hearth. What is the wisdom of Imbolc and Brigid that we can embrace in our “blue cloak” to carry forward? \nThresholds onto the path\, the turns and center place of the labyrinth will be the desk-size meditation platform to walk and culminate our time together (downloads included). Rituals\, Celtic stories\, labyrinth background and some deeper dives into this thin place will accompany the evening. Instructions for Brigid’s reed cross sent in advance. \nResources sent in advance. Open to all. \nLeader: Barrie Carter Gibby works on the creative edge between the branches of words and movement expression. An educator\, social justice activist\, accomplished pianist\, theater director\, and labyrinth facilitator\, she facilitates retreats to an international audience on a variety of themes. As a member of the Veriditas Faculty (Worldwide Labyrinth Project)\, Veriditas Council and an Advanced Certified Labyrinth facilitator\, Barrie finds sacred spaces everywhere.\n \n \nCost: $40. Sessions will be recorded for those with schedule conflicts. \nRegister below. Registrants will receive a Zoom link in the automated ticket confirmation. \nThis workshop is a natural extension of our programming\, as RCWMS has been using its own 40’ x 40’ canvas labyrinth since 1998. For more information about RCWMS’s labyrinth programming history and current opportunities please visit Labyrinth Resources and scroll down to the video featuring RCWMS’ Jeanette Stokes.

SUMMARY:Ministry of Black Women's Self Care\, November\, 2022 - with Kim Gaubault (via Zoom)
This work is a work of self-love\, communal love\, Womanist Ethicism\, it is multi-generational\, multicultural and is not finite\, but is instead as infinite as the beauty in the divinity that is Blackness. SUMMARY:Tree Songs: Braiding the Paths of the Labyrinth & the Celtic Tree Zodiac - 2 Sessions (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a two-session online labyrinth retreat\, Thursdays\, October 20th & 27th. We welcome back Barrie Gibby\, who will engage participants in a deeper understanding of the labyrinth by linking its quadrants and path to life phases and the Celtic Tree Zodiac. \nTrees are the oldest living beings on earth and are more precious now than ever. How does their wisdom deepen our understanding of transformative life? Following the path of the labyrinth and practices of the Celts\, how are we listening to the trees and learning from their profound and patient wisdom? What song is rising in the sap of your soul tree to share with the world? What can we do to take meaningful action for eco-justice in our interior and exterior landscapes to partner with the Mother? \n\nIn this two-part series\, we gather as pilgrims to celebrate the beauty of your mystical Celtic birth tree and healing properties\, identify your soul tree\, and interweave the sacred feminine through the embodied spiritual practice of walking the labyrinth. The experiences of journaling\, sharing\nphotos in a slide collage\, honoring your Ogham (ancient Celtic alphabet) symbol\, creating an altar\, and singing with the trees (and Ruth!) to unfold a new path given to us by the ancients are all elements of this two- session mini-retreat. \nResources sent in advance. Open to all. \nDates: Thursdays\, October 20 & 27\, 2022. \nLeaders: Barrie Carter Gibby is an educator\, social justice activist\, accomplished pianist\, and theater director. As a member of the Veriditas Faculty (Worldwide Labyrinth Project)\, Veriditas Council and an Advanced Certified Labyrinth facilitator\, Barrie finds sacred spaces everywhere.\n \n \nRuth Cunningham is a sound healing practitioner and was a founding member of the group Anonymous 4. She specializes in early music performance as well as improvisational sacred music from varied spiritual traditions in both liturgical and concert settings. She works with individuals and groups on using the voice and music for healing and creating a spiritual practice using sound. With Anonymous 4\, Ruth performed in concerts and festivals throughout the United States\, Europe and the Far East and made thirteen recordings.  She is a member of the core faculty for The Chartres Academy Wisdom School that meets in Chartres France each summer. Learn more about Ruth here. \n \nCost: $60.
