Inspired by the true story of the witchcraft trial of Isobel Gowdie in 1662\, a chance encounter leads teenaged Margaret into the circle of Gowdie\, a “cunning woman” who practices magic and travels in the fairy world. But Scotland is aflame with wars over religion–English against Scots\, Catholics against Protestants–and in the Scottish Highlands the witch craze is at its height. \n“Kilgore paints a world in conflict between folkloric beliefs of fairies and magic—views held by the common folk and by many in the upper class—and adherence to Presbyterian beliefs and practices…the reader comes to understand how different beliefs coexisted and which beliefs benefited those in power. Additionally\, the novel has a number of feminist threads\, illustrating injustices the female characters face and the ways they seek to be masters of their own fates. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of Historic Stagville\, a state historic site in northern Durham County that includes remnants of one of the largest plantations in North Carolina. The Bennehan-Cameron family owned approximately 30\,000 acres of land\, and enslaved about 900 people on this property. Stagville protects a fraction of the land from that plantation\, including original housing for enslaved people (1851)\, a massive barn (1860)\, and a Bennehan family house (1787-1799). Stagville is dedicated to teaching about the lives and work of enslaved people on the plantation. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to join Stagville staff and other community members in learning more about Historic Stagville. The tour will begin at 1:00. Please allow sufficient time for the drive there.\n\nLocation: 5828 Old Oxford Road\, Durham\, NC. We’ll meet at the visitors center\, which is the dark green building all the way at the end of the driveway. Everyone can park in the lot there to start. The address is 5828 Old Oxford\, Durham\, NC 27712. If folks are coming from Durham or Highway 85\, once they are on Old Oxford Highway they should keep an eye out for a Merck construction site and big company entrance on the left– the site entrance will be the next driveway on the right. Look for a sign that says Historic Stagville and a gravel driveway with a wooden gate. If you pass Stagville Road on the left\, you’ve gone too far!\n\nCost: $10/person. SUMMARY:Approaching Intuitive Collage in 3 Steps with Jeannette Brossart (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:You might ask yourself how making a collage can be intuitive and organized at the same time. Artist Jeannette Brossart uses collage as a creative jumpstart for making other art and is always surprised and inspired by the results. Since she doesn’t like to draw and paint\, she keeps a collage journal. Her “anything goes” intuitive process provides her with an abundance of questions and possibilities: where to start\, what to use first\, what does she feel like doing.  Using a 3-step framework makes it easy to adapt to your own artistic and creative strengths. For example\, Jeannette has created pages and pages with just images and text from National Geographic magazines. This workshop will encourage participants to use papers full of color and texture that might be sitting on your desk\, bits and scraps of treasures you can’t bear to part with\, or parts of your own journal musings or letters from others. \nJoin Jeannette Brossart for some collage fun. She will be working in real time alongside you. This class will spend some time on material selection. Please have magazines\, paper scraps\, etc. available. You don’t have to cut anything out ahead of time\, we recommend making copies of any materials you do not want to damage. After the material selection process\, we’ll move on to assembly/composition and then reflection/sharing as desired. \nMaterials needed:  \nWide variety of images/text: magazines (OLD NAT GEOS are great for this! scrap papers\, ephemera\, repurposed art\, journal pages\, newspaper clippings\, etc. \nTIP: make copies if you do not want to use originals! \nAdhesive and applicator:  Mod Podge is preferred\, but most white PVA/dry clear glues will work if you water them down. Foam or wide paintbrush will work OK for glue. \nBase item to stick to: wood\, cardboard\, or double page thickness in an art journal works too. \nRecommended extras: wax paper\, scissors\, baby wipes for hands/glue drips \n** we won’t be using wet media like paint\, marker\, etc. in this class\, but you can modify to add BEFORE the top layer of Mod Podge as you like. \nLeader: Jeannette Brossart is a professional mosaic artist\, public artist\, and teaching artist in Durham\, NC. DESCRIPTION:RCWMS is honored to invite you to a reading with Melanie Morrison from her new book\, Letters from Old Screamer Mountain. The reading is sponsored by RCWMS and EVERYbody Reads\, Books and Stuff\, an independent bookstore in Melanie’s hometown of Lansing\, Michigan. \nIn 1939\, when Melanie Morrison’s mother\, Eleanor\, was eighteen\, she spent a winter weekend at the home of Lillian Smith on Old Screamer Mountain in North Georgia. Smith was a white Southern author who wrote scathing critiques of white supremacy. That weekend was an unforgettable turning point in Eleanor’s young life as she and her college friends stayed up late listening to Lillian read from her manuscripts and talk about the shriveled-up heart of whiteness. \n\nSeven decades later\, in 2012\, Melanie made a pilgrimage to the Lillian E. Smith Center to write about the intergenerational legacies of lynching and how that reign of terror remains largely unacknowledged by the descendants of its white perpetrators.\n \n\nFrom the mountain\, Melanie wrote letters to her mother describing the avalanche of emotions and epiphanies she was experiencing. Letters from Old Screamer Mountain is an intimate testimony to the power of intergenerational legacies and the urgency to write what must not be forgotten. \nMelanie S. Morrison is the author of four books\, including Murder on Shades Mountain: The Legal Lynching of Willie Peterson and the Struggle for Justice in Jim Crow Birmingham.
