Historic Stagville Tour – October 2021

October 19, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

$10.00

Join us for a tour of Historic Stagville, a state historic site in northern Durham County that includes remnants of one of the largest plantations in North Carolina. The Bennehan-Cameron family owned approximately 30,000 acres of land, and enslaved about 900 people on this property. Stagville protects a fraction of the land from that plantation, including original housing for enslaved people (1851), a massive barn (1860), and a Bennehan family house (1787-1799). Stagville is dedicated to teaching about the lives and work of enslaved people on the plantation.

Don’t miss this opportunity to join Stagville staff and other community members in learning more about Historic Stagville. The tour will begin at 1:00. Please allow sufficient time for the drive there.
Location: 5828 Old Oxford Road, Durham, NC. We’ll meet at the visitors center, which is the dark green building all the way at the end of the driveway. Everyone can park in the lot there to start. The address is 5828 Old Oxford, Durham, NC 27712. If folks are coming from Durham or Highway 85, once they are on Old Oxford Highway they should keep an eye out for a Merck construction site and big company entrance on the left– the site entrance will be the next driveway on the right. Look for a sign that says Historic Stagville and a gravel driveway with a wooden gate. If you pass Stagville Road on the left, you’ve gone too far!
Cost: $10/person. Additional donations to Stagville are welcome here.
