Why would someone seek out feminist and/or womanist spiritual direction? How might it benefit them on their spiritual journey?
Being a woman* in our American culture is challenging; women continue to navigate maintaining old roles and responsibilities while trying to achieve new ones. Feminist and/or womanist spiritual direction helps women to understand their feelings, identify their challenges and take ownership of their desires. Too often a woman is defined by the expectations of others, and it takes time and help to remove those layers and find what lies underneath, which is one’s true nature. Moving through this process and discovering one’s own priorities is truly a spiritual journey.
A feminist and/or womanist spiritual director can be a valuable companion in this journey. Each person’s journey is unique, just as each person is unique. Working with a spiritual director provides individualized assistance with the process of discovering one’s truest self.
Each person’s purpose for seeking spiritual direction may be different, but some overarching goals are knowing oneself, being aware and moving toward one’s desires, and feeling competent and whole within oneself. When this is achieved or in process, a woman may find her own specific calling to serve others and to serve the earth.
Always, women who work with spiritual directors are in charge of their process, with the director providing assistance and support. Women who are ready to look within and move toward what is truly their calling may find spiritual direction to be a fruitful service.
The RCWMS Feminist & Womanist Spiritual Direction Project connects folks with the formal practice of spiritual direction. Please visit our list of resources to learn more about area practitioners and places of study.
*RCWMS invites all women, including trans women, to participate in our programming, seek spiritual direction, and take part in our community.
