As part of our ongoing documentary film project featuring North Carolina quilter, educator, and community organizer Jereann King Johnson, we are thrilled to share a short, five-minute film about Jereann and her work! Many thanks to filmmaker Bree von Bradsky, who created this film.
We invite folks to view Jereann’s quilt work at the Heritage Quilters quilt show, titled “Evolution of a Tradition.” The collection is available to view now through November 12, 2023.
The quilt show is on display at the Lakeland Cultural Arts Center gallery in Littleton, NC. There will be a reception at 6:00 pm on Friday, October 27. The lobby gallery is open Tuesday–Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, as well as before performances. More about Heritage Quilters and the show here.
Included in the show will be Jereann’s quilt featured in the image below, titled “Bree Newsome: Courageous and Bold.”
On June 27, 2015, Bree Newsome scaled the flagpole on the grounds of the South Carolina statehouse and took down the Confederate flag. It was days after Dylann Roof attended a bible study at Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, and murdered nine members. Motivated by the murders and other injustices, removing the flag and getting arrested was a bold and courageous act by a Black woman who could no longer wait for state leaders to remove the flag, long seen as a symbol of hatred, enslavement, oppression, and terrorism.
You are also invited to attend a Lakeland Cultural Arts Center performance of the play CROWNS, to be performed October 20–22 & Oct 27–29, 2023. In this moving and celebratory musical play, hats become a springboard for an exploration of Black history and identity as seen through the eyes of a young Black woman. Purchase your tickets here.
Stay tuned for future updates on the feature-length film project!
