RCWMS is committed to supporting women (trans and cis) and nonbinary folks as they find their voices and make them heard. In addition to our writing classes, workshops, and retreats, we run an essay contest in most years. Our 2024 Essay Contest opens for submissions on May 15 and will remain open through June 30, 2024.
THEME: Our 2024 artist-in-residence MJ Sharp has concentrated much of her recent photography on the night sky, and has captured her experience of darkness in these two images. Reflect on one or both of these images, or on your own experiences of darkness and/or night.
Seeking more inspiration? We recommend DarkSky, the Light Pollution Map, Archaeoastronomy Cornwall, information about the Merry Maidens Stone Circle, and information about Carwynnen Quoit.
DETAILS: Women (cis and trans) 18 years of age or older may submit up to two nonfiction essays, 1,200 words or less. Previous first-place winners and current RCWMS Board members not eligible. No sermons, please. Do not put your name on your essay(s). Fill out the online cover letter form with the essay’s title, your name, and your email address. Submissions opened May 15, 2024 and close June 30, 2024.
PRIZES: $600, to be split among three winners. Winning essays may be published in the RCWMS newsletter, South of the Garden, in September or December 2024, and will be featured on the rcwms.org blog.
